The fire broke out in a terrace home on Carlisle Road just after 6.30am on Friday.

Firefighters worked to contain and put out the blaze until 8am.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "The resident was given first aid on the scene by firefighters and a defibrillator was used on him until the arrival of paramedics.

"They further worked alongside paramedics and the casualty was transported to the Mater Hospital."

The fire is being treated as accidental.
