Man 'critical' following New Lodge fire

An 80-year-old man is said to be in a critical condition in hospital following a fire in the New Lodge area of north Belfast.

The fire broke out in a terrace home on Carlisle Road just after 6.30am on Friday.Firefighters worked to contain and put out the blaze until 8am.A spokeswoman for the fire service said: "The resident was given first aid on the scene by firefighters and a defibrillator was used on him until the arrival of paramedics."They further worked alongside paramedics and the casualty was transported to the Mater Hospital."The fire is being treated as accidental.
