Man charged with IRA membership

A 53-year-old arrested by police investigating the 2005 murder of Robert McCartney in Belfast has been charged with IRA membership.

Mr McCartney, a 33-year-old father of two from the Short Strand area, was attacked after he became involved in a row in Magennis's Bar in the city centre.
He was beaten and stabbed outside the premises and later died in hospital.
The man was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the killing and taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
He has been charged with IRA membership and addressing a meeting to encourage support or to further the activities of the IRA.
He will appear at Laganside Magistrates' Court on Friday.
