The accident happened at Sheepland close to Ardglass just after 3pm on Saturday.
It is understood the man, who is from the Downpatrick area, was first helped from the water by members of his family.
He had suffered injuries to his back, neck, shoulder and chest.
Coastguard crews were then called and approached the isolated area to rescue him - however, due to the nature of his wounds, it was decided he should be airlifted from the rocks.
An Irish Coastguard helicopter from Dublin was called and the victim was winched to safety.
He is currently receiving treatment at the Royal Victoria hospital for injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
