A 74-year-old man is being treated in hospital after he was shot in the chest by a masked man near Ballycastle, Co Antrim.

The man was working in a shed at his home in the Islandboy Road area, near Mosside, on Thursday at around 8.45pm when the masked assailant approached him and fired.

The pensioner was taken to hospital for treatment to his injury and his condition is described as "stable".

The man's wife is understood to have been in the property at the time of the shooting, but was not harmed.

Police are treating this incident as attempted murder and are appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or who saw anyone in the area of Islandboy Road around the time of the shooting to contact detectives at Coleraine Police Station.

North Antrim UUP MLA Robin Swann has condemned the shooting.

He said: "This is a truly shocking incident which one simply doesn't associate with a quiet town like Ballycastle and I would appeal for anyone who has any information whatsoever to pass that on to the police immediately in order that the person responsible for this incident is apprehended as soon as possible."

Chairperson of Moyle District Council, Sinn Féin Cllr Cara McShane said she was shocked to hear of the attack, as were people living in the area.

"It's an isolated area, very remote on the outskirts of Ballycastle and it's shocking that someone can drive down this remote lane and shoot someone in the chest."

Also reacting to the news, local SDLP Councillor Donal Cunningham said: "No one has the right, or mandate to the take the law into their own hands and to act as judge, jury and executioner," he said.

He also urged anyone with information about the attack to come forward to police.
