The fire at Molloy's Scrap Metals on the Monaghan Road broke out on Monday evening and 10 fire engines - including specialist high volume pumping units - are at the yard.
The Fire and Rescue Service said: "A total of 80 firefighters are working in difficult and arduous conditions to prevent the fire from spreading.
"The fire is not yet under control but due to the scale of operations the Chief Fire Officer Chris Kerr has taken command of the incident."
Police are also attending the scene of the blaze, and have advised motorists in the Monaghan Road area to exercise caution.
