Police have said an elaborate hoax was the cause of a security alert in Co Londonderry.

A number of homes in the Beagh Terrace area of Maghera were evacuated after the discovery of a suspicious object on Saturday afternoon.

The area was cordoned off and the item examined by army bomb disposal experts.

The alert has ended and all roads reopened.

Residents have been allowed to return home.
