MLA under loyalist death threat

Police have informed Sinn Fein's Alex Maskey of a death threat against him from loyalists, according to the south Belfast MLA.

The warning is understood to have been passed on by officers on Tuesday night.

The group said to be behind the threat is splinter paramilitary group, the Orange Volunteers.

They have already threatened senior members of the party, including President Gerry Adams.

Mr Maskey said he would not allow any threat to detract him from his work as an elected representative.

"I will continue to carry out my work on behalf of those citizens in South Belfast who elect me to represent them at the Assembly and will not be deterred from this important work by threats of any kind," he said.

His party colleagues Gerry Kelly, Francie Molloy and Caitriona Ruane have also been threatened by the group in recent weeks.

What is this SF under threat. Shoes on the other foot. Any fool could ring the PSNI and issue a threat. Unless there is firm evidence to support it and have the loyalist paramilitary not decommissioned.. I think they are crying wolf to get sympathy.

Andrew C. Are you able to read? The PSNI told Sinn Fein that a number of their members are under threat. I think you need to practice what you preach, ie. 'the war is over'.

Every year Sinn Fein say they are under treat from unionist, i think its just another attempt to stare up tentions between the two communities coming up to the marching season. When will they just understand that the war is over. Sinn Fein need to move forward and stop making there communities believe the war still exsits. If they had a new younger leader who will work with the unionist people then maybe we could have better peace n the future.
