The M5 has been closed in both directions from Hazelbank to Greencastle due to a security alert, police say.

The alert, which was sparked on Saturday night, is ongoing.

"Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes. There are no further details at this stage," a PSNI spokeswoman said.

Earlier a suspicious object discovered in Belfast was declared a hoax by police.

The item was found in the Glenmachan Street area of the city on Saturday afternoon.

Army bomb experts carried out a controlled explosion at the scene.

It was confirmed as a hoax a short time later, and roads in the area - including the Westlink off-slips at the Broadway junction - reopened.

The PSNI must now put on public record who they believe is carrying out most of these bomb alerts and attacks in this area. Catholic chapels across South East Antrim are being targeted in a sustained campaign and it's not rocket science to guess who's doing it. Why are the police so reluctant to name these Loyalist groupings whether they are mainstream or not? Furthermore why have there been so few arrests and prosections in respect of this?
