Scott Vineer, who is autistic, was reported missing by his mother on Thursday afternoon, after he was last seen close to the Lisburn College he attends.
"He was a boy who liked routine and would always come home, so she was deeply concerned," explained UTV reporter Jane Loughrey.
A police dog handler found the 17-year-old unconscious at the disused World of Furniture showroom on the Laganbank Road at 10pm on Friday as more than 30 officers took part in a search.
"Police have no idea yet what the motive was for this attack but he was repeatedly kicked around his head and face and is now in critical condition," said Jane Loughrey.
Detective Inspector Chris St John has appealed for information on his whereabouts after 3.30pm on Thursday.
"We need to know where Scott was during this time, who he was with, what he was doing and gather as much information as possible that could help us establish when Scott was attacked and by whom," he said.
"We need to know why Scott does not appear on CCTV anywhere in the City after Thursday afternoon. Was he in a car, a house, a party, were you with him or know someone who was? Did you speak to Scott on Thursday either in person, via telephone or social media? Do you know what his plans were?"
Scott was captured leaving the college on CCTV with a friend at around 3.10pm and then entering Castle Gardens.
Five minutes after this, he left Castle Gardens and parted company with his friend at Market Square.
The last substantiated sighting of Scott before he was found was in the Beechland Drive area at around 3.35pm on Thursday.
This pleasant and unassuming young man is now lying unconscious in a hospital bed, critically injured. We know local people are disgusted by what has happened and want to do anything they can to help us bring those responsible for this sickening attack to justice.

Chief Inspector Darrin Jones, Lisburn Area Commander commented: "Everyone in Lisburn has been left shocked by this brutal and senseless attack on a vulnerable young man."
He added: "That is why I am asking anyone with any scrap of information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to contact us. Help us find those responsible."
Scott is 6' 3", of heavy build, clean shaven with short dark hair.
He was wearing a dark hooded jacket with a blue t-shirt underneath, dark trousers and a dark beanie hat with an emblem on the front.
A statement from the South Eastern Regional College read: "Our thoughts are with Scott and his family at this very difficult time and we hope that he makes a full recovery."
Investigating officers are interested in hearing from anyone who saw people or vehicles in the area of the furniture showroom at any point between 3.35pm on Thursday and 9pm on Friday.
