Lady Faulkner was the widow of Northern Ireland's last Prime Minister, Lord Brian Faulkner.
She worked as a journalist with the Belfast Telegraph before her marriage, and was also the first national governor of BBC NI.
Lady Faulkner died peacefully at home with her three children David, Michael and Clare at her bedside.
Ulster Unionist leader Tom Elliott has expressed his sincerest condolences.
He said: "Lady Faulkner was a journalist and also secretary to Lord Brookeborough before marrying her husband.
"She later became the first woman to serve as national governor of the BBC in Northern Ireland and made a tremendous contribution to public life in Northern Ireland.
"Lady Faulkner also provided tremendous support to her husband during his political career which obviously included some of the most turbulent years of the Troubles in the early 1970s.
"On behalf of the Ulster Unionist Party I would like to express sincerest condolences and our thoughts are with Lady Faulkner's family circle at this sad time."
