Fermanagh's jailed former billionaire Sean Quinn has been granted a three-day release from Mountjoy Prison over the Christmas period - but will still miss his granddaughter's christening.

The 66-year-old businessman was jailed for contempt of court over the hiding of millions in assets from the former Anglo Irish Bank.

The decision to release him was made on Thursday afternoon, Quinn's lawyer confirmed.

"Mr Quinn will be able to spend Christmas with his family at home," Kevin Winters said.

"Which is only right and fitting, because it is no more or less than any other prisoner is entitled to at this time of year."

He added: "It is a great sense of relief to his family that his application was approved."

Quinn will now be freed on Christmas Eve.

@ Con All in Co Down, sure you're not in the Irish state and don't pay taxes to it either, so what are you worried about?

This man was consumed by greed and lost his fortune by BETTING on the share price of Anglo Irish Bank. He and his family are hiding millions of euro worth of property from the Irish State and the hard pressed Irish taxpayers. Some gullible people still believe his lies but to sum up ....he is a thief and deserves to stay in prison until he gives back the missing millions.
