It happened at 11pm on Sunday in the Long Lane area of the city, where a car was found on fire.

Army bomb experts were called out and the scene was preserved for a full technical examination.

Gardaí said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and have appealed for information about an injured, bleeding man who was seen getting a taxi.

He is believed to have been picked up outside a takeaway or pub at about 11pm on the New Street and Clanbrassil Street junction and headed towards St Patrick's Cathedral.

Police have asked the taxi driver - or any others who were approached by a man matching the description at the time and place in question - to get in touch with them.
