Former moderator and founder of the Free Presbyterian Church Ian Paisley has announced he will retire as a senior minister.

Mr Paisley, 85, informed his congregation at Ravenhill Presbyterian in Belfast of the decision on Sunday.

He said he will step down from his ministry of 65 years at the end of December.

The former DUP leader, who stepped down as First Minister of the Stormont Assembly in 2008, is currently working on his autobiography.

The man followed his heart? James, no offence, but I think you need to look up the term "Machiavellianism".

He says he brought many to savation in Jesus Christ....Paisley did not ... He should claim it was the Holy Spirit that saved the souls...For the many he "saved" many more turned their backs on religion because of him...And many lost their lives when he brought politics into religion...Jesus never had anything to do with politics... Salvation and a personal faith which is obey God . Have no other Gods but him.

Ian followed his heart and I had several dealings with him and was awed at his mannerism and he always had time to listen and would do whatever he could to help you. He was in our home several times and I can say that he was a humble man and when he prayed you could feel the prescense of God in the room. He had the guts to show leadership in his later years for the good of the country. I am the richer for knowing him. I hope he has a happy retirement.

Lorraine, Have you taken leave of your senses !!, Paisley did more to help the IRA than possibly any other single individual from outside the ranks of the same IRA. Paisley had absolutely nothing to do with the IRA's ultimate surrender. Their surrender came about as a result of a short term trial in a small selected area of the province, of an objective known as the "ogm policy", a policy that the british government and security services did not themselves think would necessarily work. In fact they were astounded at the result and how spectacularily successful they were. Paisley the self centred "businessman" had nothing to do with it.
