Army bomb experts have dealt with a viable device left in a bar in Londonderry, police have said.

The early morning security alert was sparked after the discovery of a suspicious object in the upstairs area of a bar in Stanley's Walk in Derry.

Army bomb experts, who dealt with the viable pipe bomb type device, have now left the scene, police confirmed.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

A number of homes had to be evacuated overnight due to a separate alert in the city.

A suspicious object was found by the roadside in O'Connor Court in the Ballymagroarty area at around midnight.

Army technical officers carried out two controlled explosions.

Police later declared the alert an elaborate hoax.
