Londonderry's year as UK City of Culture is up and running - and a crucial part of the celebrations involves giving local artists a chance to shine.

World famous names like the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Ballet will all be performing in the city, but 2013 is also an opportunity to showcase home-grown talent.

Organisers are hoping to provide a platform for Derry to tell its own cultural story through song, dance, poetry and the visual arts.

An early chance to do just that will happen at the Millennium Forum theatre on Friday.

Home-Grown is a concert featuring some of the city's singer-songwriters, including Paul Casey, Paddy Nash and Bronagh Gallagher.

Mr Casey spoke about where the idea came from.

"Last year with the Clipper event I organised the LegenDerry Night, and it was such a brilliant night because there were four, it was to be all local bands - there were the Undertones, Paddy Nash, Best Boy Grip and myself," he explained.

"It was all local crews and stage people, and there were 10,000 people in Ebrington Square and it was absolutely fantastic and it was great to get that support from local people for local bands. So it gave me the idea to get in touch with Bronagh and Paddy again to say for this next year, this year now, we should do something to kick it all off."

Paddy Nash said: "When Derry won the bid for City of Culture it was saying to the world come and look at us, come and look at what we have to offer."

Singer and actress Bronagh Gallagher said: "Given the opportunity, the talent that's in this city and the thirst to be given an opportunity, to be given some kind of help financially or whatever it is or just a structure to rehearse or to work, it's boundless."

The show gets underway at 8pm.
