Holyland residents in parental plea

The Belfast Holyland Regeneration Association has issued an open letter to parents of students ahead of this year's St Patrick's Day celebrations.

Last year violent scenes flared as groups of people, some of them students, clashed with police.

The letter appeals to the parents of students to ensure their children do not invite extra people into the area this year.

It reads: "We know and accept the argument that "it was not all students", but the fact remains that the events were brought about by the 'anything goes' culture which has been allowed to develop in the Holyland: and is now spreading to other parts of South Belfast."

The letter also calls on the universities in Belfast to invest in more student-dedicated accommodation.

"The fact is that the area is hugely over-populated: with thousands of young people crammed into houses which were originally designed to cater for less than half the number of occupants there are now.

"They come straight out of school into a claustrophobic and unsupervised environment, where alcohol and drugs are readily available."

The Association appeals for parents and assembly members to write to the universities and press for large-scale purpose-built student accommodation.

A major reason for this predicament is that the Universities do not provide sufficient purpose-built, managed student accommodation.
