The criminal damage in the Falls Road area was reported at around 7.20am on Friday.

Police said enquiries are ongoing at this time.

SDLP MLA for West Belfast Alex Attwood has said that the incident was offensive and upsetting for local people.

"It is very upsetting for local people to see the statue damaged in this way and is incredibly offensive that anyone would behave in this way," he commented.

"It seems likely that this was an attempt to steal the statue and given the time of year, it is questionable where it might have ended up.

"This is completely irresponsible action, and I would encourage those of influence in the community to discourage this kind of behaviour. Anyone with any information should contact the PSNI."

Gods don't care about statues, because gods are imaginary.

How much more before this country opens its eyes and realises what other countries see .... Na forget that question, when you read the comments below not one condemned it,too intent on making snide remarks to realise how pathetic NI is. Ignorance is bliss.

Alex Atwood is no better than Gerry Kelly. Point the finger at the other side with no firm basis for such accusations. No wonder this country is in the state it is in when we have politicians who don't know when to keep quiet and continue to agitate and raise tensions. One only has to look at the damage to a Chapel in Kilkeel and the PSNI confirmation that it was not sectarian. I despair.

Alex Atwood is terribly offensive and upsetting to my ears. if he WANTS TO KNOW ? how people could behave in this way, maybe he should invest his so called 'local' knowledge in his 'so called community ' and refrain from tribal ' the other side must have done it' politics.

I find it strange that no one who was at the flag unfurling on the site of the old andersonstown ruc barracks on Thursday night noticed this damage as I did when I drove past it
