Police said the monument in Main Street was targeted sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

The attack was reported to police at 8.15am on Monday and investigating officers are treating the incident as sectarian.

The attack comes after sectarian slogans were spray painted on two Catholic churches in Glenavy and Stoneyford over the weekend.

Lisburn councillor Pat Catney, who reported the latest incident to police, condemned the attack.

He said: "The people responsible are obviously feeding off their own publicity because they have nothing to offer.

"The community has worked hard to clean up the churches and now they are having to do the same on the war memorial.

"I just wish these idiots would just stop and let the community do what they do best and that is working and living together."

The SDLP councillor added: "We as elected representatives have shown a united front in condemning these incidents.

"The community is united. Those responsible are the other side and offer nothing, they are completely destructive and disruptive."

PSNI Area Commander, Chief Inspector John Wilson, said enquiries were continuing and urged anyone with information to report it on the non-emergency number 101.

He added: "If someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Thr people of Glenavy do not want this sectarian nonsense in our village. These scum bags should live somewhere else if they dont like living in harmony with their neighbours.
