It was discovered in the Ballycolman area of the town on Saturday morning.
Four houses had to be evacuated between 9.20am and 2pm as police and army bomb squad officers carried out the operation.
The suspected firearm has now been removed for further testing.
Local councillor Patsy Kelly has expressed his concern.
"I have been told that this device left in the Ballycolman Estate, which is in a large built up area is a viable one. Army bomb experts are dealing with the situation," the SDLP man said.
"This is completely unacceptable and I had hoped that we had moved on from a time when such terrible actions would be visited upon the community.
"I am especially concerned for the families who have had to be moved from their homes and the distress and disturbance caused to them as a result."
