The 39-year-old was attacked by at least two armed and masked men at Legnatraw in St Johnston on Monday night.
It is understood he was shot four times in the arms and legs.
The man was taken by ambulance to Lettekenny General Hospital where his condition is described as not life threatening.
A 34-year-old woman who was inside the house at the time of the attack was not hurt.
Police in the Republic of Ireland have preserved the scene for a technical examination.
They said a silver 4x4 vehicle was located at Moness, a townsland approximately one mile from the scene of the shooting, shortly after it happened.
It has also been preserved for technical examination.
Anyone who saw the 4x4 around the vicinity of Legnatraw or around Moness between 9pm and 11pm on Monday has been asked to contact Gardai.
