The blaze took hold at Spences Mountain south of Newcastle on Saturday evening.
Due to poor light crews could not be deployed until the next morning, however they monitored the situation overnight to make sure the fire did not spread and to reassure local residents.
Two fire appliances from Newcastle and Kilkeel attended the scene at first light and the fire was extinguished by around 8am. The cause of the gorse fire is now being investigated.
Station Commander Alastair McConville, who was at the blaze, appealed to the public not to start gorse fires and to be careful and stay safe over the summer months.
