The vehicle, believed to have been involved in a number of overnight burglaries, was driven at speed through Cork City before colliding with a garda van and other vehicles at Merchants Quay.

It then travelled to the Mallow Road where the police motorcyclist was hit.

A statement from Gardai said: "The injured garda was taken to Cork University Hospital with injuries described as non-life threatening. The injured Garda is still in hospital."

The van was later stopped near Blarney and two men in their 20s were arrested.

Police said two men were charged and were expected to appear before a special sitting of Cork District Court later on Saturday.
