Fears are growing that two north Dublin men may have been abducted and murdered by an organised crime gang after the car they were travelling in was located by gardaí near a lough in Co Westmeath.

Eoin O'Connor, 32, and Anthony Keegan, 33, disappeared after going to see a number of people in Ballyjamesduff in Co Cavan on Tuesday.

It is understood the men may be linked to a criminal gang.

Both men are believed to have travelled together to the Cavan area in a silver Ford Focus car registration 04 D 4638.

The vehicle was located earlier in a car park at Lough Owel, just off the N4 near Mullingar in Co Westmeath. It has been taken away for forensic examination.

An Garda Síochána began their searches on Thursday in the Virginia and Ballyjamesduff areas of Co Cavan.

The major search operation resumed early on Friday morning and has been extended to Mullingar and the wider Co Westmeath area, and Dublin.

Local and national garda units, and the Armed Response Unit are involved in the land, air and water searches.

Gardaí are seriously concerned for the safety of the two and have appealed to land owners in Co Cavan to check their fields.

The men were reported missing on Wednesday night.

It has been reported that gardaí received an anonymous phonecall on the same day to say that two bodies have been dumped in a field in the Ballyjamesduff area.

One of the missing men, Eoin O'Connor was referred to in the call.

Special Correspondent with the Irish Independent, Paul Williams said: "We understand that after the families of Eoin O'Connor and Anthony Keegan separately reported them missing that gardaí received a 999 call in which they were informed that the bodies of two men had been dumped in a field in the Ballyjamesduff area.

"Now what was interesting about this call was that it specifically referred to Eoin O'Connor as one of two men who was in this field."

Mr Williams said that gardaí are now trying to trace the call.

"We now know that Eoin O'Connor, before he left on Tuesday, informed a relative that if he didn't turn up within a specified period of time that they should go straight to police and report him missing and to inform them of what he was doing," he added.

Mr O'Connor was last seen at Kilbarron Avenue, Coolock on Tuesday. He is described as being 6ft tall, stocky build with short brown hair and blue eyes. When last seen he was wearing a grey track suit bottoms and a blue windbreaker type jacket with a hood.

Mr Keegan is described as being 5ft 10in tall, medium build with short brown hair and brown eyes.

Maybe if the car colour had been reported correctly it would have been located sooner! That car is not silver!
