The 45-year-old was detained by Serious Crime Branch officers on Monday afternoon and taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
Mr Kearney, 46, was found shot dead in a lake in a north Belfast park.
The father of four had been missing since Tuesday and his body was pulled from the water last Wednesday afternoon.
On Monday the man's funeral took place in the Holy Family Church on the Limestone Road before burial at Milltown Cemetery.
A dissident republican group is suspected to have been involved in the murder, which police described as "callous and cold-blooded".
The killing was the second in a week blamed on dissident republicans.
Barry McCrory, 35, was killed in a top-floor flat above a Derry cafe on Shipquay Street on Thursday in what the PSNI described as a "brutal execution".
The Assembly is where the people of Northern Ireland decide their future, not thugs on the street, and that has to be the message that goes out from all of us together
Justice Minister David Ford
On Monday, Justice Minister David Ford called on the community to unite against dissident republican gunmen.
He blamed "thugs" with no justification for their crimes and urged MLAs to live up to the work of the security forces in dealing with the threat posed.
Mr Ford told the Assembly: "It is right that we should stand, and in a united way, condemn such attacks.
"Whatever motivation is claimed by these thugs and terrorists, whether they are unionist or nationalist in background, they have no right to the actions they take."
"Let us ensure that is the message, let us ensure that we work together in a constructive way and let us ensure that we collectively provide the support which the police need.
"We should thank the police, we should thank the army technical officers for the work they have carried out in recent days, as we should ensure that politics lives up to their work."
Detectives investigating the murder have appealed for information.
