Fresh attack on ATM machine in a shop in in Augher in County Tyrone
A fresh attempt has been made to steal an ATM machine, this time from a shop in Augher, County Tyrone.

Police said that the front shutters of the shop on Main Street were forced open in the early hours of Monday morning and an attempt was made to steal a free standing ATM machine.

They are investigating a possible link to two vehicles which were found on fire nearby a short time later.

This latest attack comes after two machines were stolen in County Cavan at the weekend.

Thieves used a digger to remove the machines from branches of Ulster Bank and Bank of Ireland in Cootehill at around 5.30am on Saturday.

The digger was driven on to a low loader before the robbery. Both vehicles were set on fire afterwards.

An attempt was also made to steal an ATM machine in Camlough in South Armagh at the weekend.

There have been renewed calls for tougher action against criminal gangs targeting cash machines.

"I'm confident it can be solved provided the banks, wider communities, the retailers, wider public and police act together in a co-ordinated fashion and bring people before the courts.", DUP MLA Gregory Campbell told UTV.

"We really need to get severe sentences for those people to make sure it stops."

SDLP MLA John Dallat has said the issue should already have been addressed.

"ATMs are an absolute necessity and I'm surprised and disappointed that the banks haven't entered into some sort of fightback long before now," he said.
