There is no World War Two German submarine sitting in the mud at the bottom of Lough Foyle, the Department of Environment claims.

It had been thought that a small U-boat had been found under water close to the Foyle Bridge.

Less than two weeks ago, Environment Minister Alex Atwood said there could be a war grave and he advised divers to stay away from the wreck.

But Mr Attwood said sonic scans of the area have not "not confirmed the possibility of a submarine or other significant find".

"The original image that excited interest was the form of a 'sonic illusion'.

"When the site was scoped out the sonar exaggerated and enlarged what is there in the sweep around the site," he explained.

The possibility of a shipwreck or submarine at the bottom of Lough Foyle had peaked public interest, and the Minister said he too shares "a sense of disappointment".

My husband's grandfather, Charlie Cushenan, owned a scrapyard in Ballymena. He got all the WWII Submarines from Derry and transported them to Ballymena. I think he would have known if he forgot any!
