Sunday's BMI services to and from London Heathrow have been cancelled as heavy snow is forecast to affect the capital, the airport said.

At least 10cm of snow is expected to settle at Heathrow Airport where a third of Sunday's flights will be grounded amid adverse weather conditions and the possibility of freezing fog.

All passengers are advised to check with their airline before travelling.

Most of the UK has been placed on amber alert, which is the Met Office's second highest severe weather warning.

Most parts of Scotland, England and Wales are expected to wake up to a blanket of snow on Sunday morning, with 5cm-10cm forecast in many areas.

Northern Ireland is expected to escape most of the extreme weather, with a mainly dry, bright start over Antrim and Down on Sunday.

Elsewhere it will be cloudy with patchy light rain, becoming more persistent and heavier over west Tyrone and Fermanagh in the afternoon, with maximum temperatures of 8C.
