The airline said shortly after take-off at Birmingham Airport a cockpit warning light indicated a possible minor technical issue.
"The aircraft landed normally and will be inspected by Ryanair engineers," a spokesperson explained.
"Ryanair sincerely apologised to all customers affected by this delay, who have been provided with refreshment vouchers."
The Birmingham to Derry service has been delayed as a result.
A spokesperson from City of Derry Airport advised that Ryanair flight FR1108 arriving from Birmingham has been delayed and is now expected to arrive at 2.40pm and Ryanair flight FR1109 to Birmingham, scheduled to depart from City of Derry Airport at 10.40am has been delayed and is now expected to depart at 3.05pm.
Passengers are advised that they must check in as normal.
