Around 100 people have taken part in a flag protest at Belfast City Hall.

The group gathered amid a heavy police presence on Saturday afternoon.

Some of the crowds marched in from the east of the city.

Police, some in full riot gear, ensured that the protest did not spill onto the road at Donegall Place.

It comes after Belfast City Council voted earlier this month to only fly the Union flag from City Hall on designated days.

To Jemma in East Belfast who stated "Northern Ireland (Ulster)IS a part of the United Kingdom as are all the people born there and the currency it uses". Think your geography needs to be brushed up on!! Northern Ireland may be British but Ulster (as you put in brackets after Northern Ireland) is not!! Six of Ulster's nine counties, Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone are part of Northern Ireland and the United Kingdom. Three Ulster counties – Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan – form part of the Republic of Ireland. Therefore Ulster is not all British!

Paul in London, what makes you think that Scotland will break away in 2014 ? What evidence are you drawing on ? All the polls that I have seen suggest that the nationalists are not winning the argument. The question of EU membership, the future of Defence, the very fragile nature of the scottish financial sector and the fact that oil supplies are set to fall as a proportion of the Scottish economy has raised serious doubts as to whether the nationalist case has been thought through. Salmond is without doubt a class political operator, but people are clesrly starting to realise that Scotland (like Ulster) is better off with Britain!

I think they are right to protest, the Flag should be flown all year round i have to drive past our Local Macdonalds every day in Lurgan were there are numerous Tri-Colour Flags flying 365 days a year and i am fed up looking at them why isnt something done about that, this is the United Kingdom not Ireland.
