The blaze started on the first floor of a complex on St Mary's Street at 6.30pm on Thursday.

Fire crews wearing breathing equipment went into the heavily smoke-logged building and brought five people to safety. Two of the patients required medical treatment.

A number of other people had already left the flats before crews arrived.

The fire, which was confined to one area, was quickly extinguished and the only damage was caused by smoke. Crews have returned to the scene on Friday for further investigations.
