The one car collision happened on the Dublin Road shortly after 9.45am.
A second young child and two women were taken to Antrim Area Hospital for treatment to their injuries.
The child has been transferred to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children, while the two women are not believed to be seriously hurt.
UUP MLA for South Antrim Danny Kinahan described the death as a tragedy.
"I was extremely saddened to learn today of the death of a baby following a road traffic accident on the Dublin Road in Antrim this morning.
"This is obviously a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the family involved," he said.
The Dublin Road was closed for a time after the crash but has since reopened.
In a statement the NI Ambulance Service offered its sympathies to those who lost loved ones in three separate crashes in the last 24 hours.
A 39-year-old man sustained fatal injuries when two lorries collided in Coalisland and a 71-year-old motorcyclist also lost his life on the M1 motorway in the area.
"We are also very aware of the emotional impact on the crews who responded these scenes and will also be thinking about them over the next few days as they come to terms with what they had witnessed," the Ambulance Service said.
"It's at times like this that they should really understand the massive contribution they make to society in general and, more often than not, the communities in which they live.
"Let's hope that everyone else on the road remains safe. It's been a bad 24 hours."
Police have appealed for anyone who saw the crashes to contact them.
