Five charged in Omagh murder case

Five men have been charged with affray in connection with the investigation into the murder of Co Monaghan teenager Jason McGovern, who died after being assaulted during a night out in Omagh, Co Tyrone.

Two men aged 21 and three teenagers aged 17, 18 and 19 are due to appear at Omagh Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

The 21-year-olds were arrested in the Omagh area on Friday morning, while the three teenagers were detained earlier this week.

Another 21-year-old, who was arrested by police, has been released on bail.

Jason McGovern, 19, was found dead in bed at about midday on New Year's Eve after being seriously assaulted in the early hours of that morning.

He had made it back to a friend's house in Emyvale, Co Monaghan, having been first attacked by a group of about five youths outside the Terrace Bar at John Street in Omagh.

When he was followed by at least three of the original group, Jason was again attacked as he tried to get a taxi outside the Weigh Inn at Kevlin Road.

Detectives have made a specific appeal for information as part of their investigation.

They are keen to speak to the driver and occupants of a dark-coloured Renault Mégane, which was parked outside the Terrace Bar at the time of the initial assault.

Police believe they may have witnessed the attack and want them to contact them.

As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS.
