It has emerged that fireworks were thrown into Maghaberry Prison during a republican 24 hour protest.

A Republic of Ireland flag was also put on the gates of the jail as around 150 people took part in the demonstration on Friday night.

Family and legal visits were cancelled at the prison on Friday and Saturday because of the protest at the high security prison in Lisburn.

Visits will continue as normal on Sunday.

The demonstration was being held because of concerns over strip searching at the jail.

Around 30 republican prisoners are also on a dirty protest.

brilliant they threw fireworks over the fence hope it kept the scum they are supporting awake though i dont know how they sleep with their self inflicted stench in their cells.. nobody except a very tiny minority support their so-called cause.. the union is safe violent republicanism is well and truely beaten so stop reporting on these pathetic people and they will soon disappear...

Think they would have been better throwing soap, bleach and shampoo instead of fireworks. Don't know why utv bother to report this nonsense. At the end of the day who cares if these people choose to live in their own filth.

These demonstrations all came about because of concerns over strip searching at the jail. Its a jail and prisoners will try and smuggle in drugs, contraband etc. Strip searching is a way of preventing this. If the prisoners or their visitors dont want to be strip searched then STOP trying to smuggle drugs etc into the jail. SIMPLE!!!.
