A Newtownabbey man was jailed for cutting his teenage son with a kitchen knife he held to his throat after appearing in court in Belfast on Monday.
The 42-year-old carried out the attack after his ex-wife left their children with him so she could be with her new partner in Turkey, a court heard.
The man, who cannot be named to protect his victim's identity, was ordered to serve six months in prison for assault, threats to kill and possession of an offensive weapon.
He was released on bail pending an appeal against the outcome.
Belfast Magistrates Court was told the offences occurred at his home last November.
During a row the man was said to have wielded the knife and nicked his son on the hand when he tried to defend himself.
He contested the charges, but declined to subject his son to any cross-examination.
