Around 30 families have been evacuated from their homes after a carbon monoxide leak in east Belfast.
Around 30 families, who were evacuated when a carbon monoxide leak was discovered in east Belfast, have returned home.

The Fire Service said they were called to My Lady's Road on Thursday morning after residents heard rumbling noises underneath their homes and reported a smell of gas.

Firefighters recorded carbon monoxide readings in some houses and immediately evacuated some properties.

A 50-metre exclusion zone was put in place to seal off My Lady's Road between Cherryville Street and London Road.

Underground electrical cables on fire were found to be responsible for the suspicious smell.

It is understood a number of people, including firefighters, received precautionary health checks.

Pottinger Alliance councillor Máire Hendron has praised the authorities for their swift action.

Cllr Hendron said: "This was a very worrying incident and I am sure it has been very shocking for people in the locality.

"Given that the ground was actually trembling at the location this provides an insight into how potentially dangerous the situation could have been."
