Police have said a small explosion heard in Belfast city centre overnight was caused by an aerosol can being set alight.

Officers were called to the Chichester Street and Victoria Street areas shortly after midnight on Monday and the area was cordoned off.

It followed reports of a small explosion at around 12.20am and a sighting of a man dressed all in black setting a suspicious object alight.

Army bomb squad officers carried out investigations and discovered that the object was an aerosol can which had exploded inside a rucksack.

No-one was injured and there was no serious damaged caused to property, and the area has been reopened to traffic after all cordons were lifted.

Police asked anyone who saw the man or any other suspicious activity to contact them.
