A man entered a house in the Cloughreagh Park area on Monday morning at 4am, but was disturbed by the woman and made off empty-handed.

Police, who were alerted about the burglary, stopped a car in the Newtownhamilton area, arresting three men aged 19, 20 and 27.

They were detained on suspicion of going equipped for theft and are currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are appealing to anyone with any information about the break-in or anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time of the incident to contact them.

Pat Mc Ginn, Newry and Mourne Sinn Féin Councillor, who was in touch with the victim's family members, was informed that the elderly victim has been left severely traumatised.

"This is an appalling incident, which has left a respected elderly lady, her family and neighbours both traumatised and concerned. I share the anger and concern of the local Cloughreagh community and we hope and pray that the victim will make as full a recovery as possible.

"Those who break and enter into homes and in particular those of those most vulnerable need to be apprehended and face the full rigours of the law."
