She was hit by a car on the Shore Road close to a convenience shop at around 2.40pm on Tuesday.

The lady was taken to hospital for treatment to her injuries, which police described as "significant but not life-threatening".

The driver fled from the scene and a short time later police arrested a 34-year-old man in Whiteabbey village.

He was charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily injury, and suspicion of driving with excess alcohol. The man is also facing charges of failing to stop and report a crash.

He was released on bail to return at a later date.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the crash or a man driving a gold Rover car before or after the collision to contact them.
