The couple were inside the Edenvale Avenue property when the attack happened at about 12.40am on Saturday however they were not injured in the blaze, but were left badly shaken.

It had started when a Renault car was set alight and had spread to the house, damaging the front door, porch area and roof. A nearby property and a Citroen car were also slightly damaged.

Fire crews said the vehicle was "well alight" when they arrived at the scene but it was quickly brought under control.

David Lonnen, Station Commander of Portadown District, told UTV more than 30 vehicles have been targeted in arson attacks in Banbridge over the past year.

He added: "We are treating the fire as deliberate ignition and the police are investigating.

"There were occupants in both of the houses but no rescues were required as they were out of the buildings when the fire service arrived."

Police asked anyone with more information on the arson attack to get in touch.
