An eighth person from Northern Ireland has contracted swine flu.

The Public Health Agency confirmed the latest case on Friday night.

The woman, who had recently visited the United States, has mild flu symptoms and is recovering at home.

The agency are now contacting people who were in close contact with her since she developed symptoms and are urging the public not to panic.

Dr Carolyn Harper, Director of Public Health at the PHA, said: "People should not be alarmed by this further case and we should expect to see more over the next few days and weeks. That has been the pattern in other countries and we are planning for a similar picture here. We have good systems in place to respond to any cases that appear."

It is understood the other seven cases in Northern Ireland have either recovered or are recovering well.

The Northern Ireland swine flu helpline is staffed Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm on 0800 051 41 42.

Information on swine flu is also available from the UK swine flu information line on 0800 1 513 513.
