An Irish aid worker was missing, feared kidnapped, in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan.

Dubliner Sharon Commins, 32, who works for Goal, was taken hostage by armed men at a compound in the town of Kutum.

It is believed that a Ugandan aid worker was with her.

The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed the woman was missing.

Ireland does not have an embassy in Sudan however diplomats in Egypt and the Sudanese capital Khartoum were involved in efforts to track her.

"In Khartoum we have an Honorary Consul, he is actively pursuing the case," a Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said.

Irish embassy staff in Cairo are also liaising with officials in Sudan.
