The explosion on Sunday night caused damage to homes in the long Lane area of Dublin before a car was found on fire.
Nearby homeowners reported hearing a loud bang, with some spotting a potential suspect fleeing from the scene.
"His face was covered in blood," one man said.
"He couldn't see where he was running ... He was screaming in pain."
Gardaí have already appealed for information, particularly about an injured and bleeding man who got into a taxi at the New Street and Clanbrassil Street junction.
According to the Mirror, the bomber was injured by his own device.
The newspaper reports that a senior police source claimed "it could be a case where he didn't put his watch forward and the timer went off too soon".
