The 58-year-old died after he fell 50ft into the sea while he was taking photographs close to the lighthouse with another man on Sunday afternoon.
Mr McCourt, who was from Antrim, was a member of the town's camera club.
Following his fall two lifeboats were launched by Lough Swilly RNLI for the rescue just before 3pm.
The Irish Coastguard helicopter from Sligo also attended the scene and airlifted Mr McCourt to Letterkenny General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Charlie McAleer, chair of the Antrim Camera Club said news of the death came as a great shock.
He added: "Many of our members just can't believe that it is our John McCourt that has died.
"He really loved photography and loved travelling around the province taking pictures. He had a great passion for it and a real talent.
"He was a real hospitable character and our thoughts go out to his family. We are a very close community and we are all feeling it."
