Police said it was discovered on Tuesday morning that a quantity of land had been removed from the field on the O'Neill Road. Another pitch in the area was also reportedly damaged.

It comes after there had been reports the night before of alleged criminal damage and anti-social behaviour at a nearby building site.

Police recorded no disturbances when they attended the scene at 8.50pm on Monday, however they are now investigating a link to the attacks on the football pitches.

A spokesperson said: "It is believed that a digger from the nearby building site was used during the incident. Enquiries are continuing."

Police have asked anyone with information to contact them by calling 101.
