Motorists 'may have driven over device'

A suspicious object discovered in east Belfast has been removed for further examination, police have said.

A member of the public reported the item which was found near the Mount Centre at the junction with the Albertbridge Road and Castlereagh Street at around 6.15pm on Wednesday.Army bomb experts examined the object which was then taken away as the operation ended."It's believed a number of motorists may have driven over the device before it was reported to police," a PSNI spokesperson said."Detectives at Musgrave Street are investigating the circumstances and would like to hear from anyone with any information or from anyone who was in the area and noticed any suspicious activity."Local Alliance MP Naomi Long has claimed that the device was "a suspected nail bomb"."Whoever is behind planting this device is utterly reckless, placing at risk the lives of local residents and any passers-by," she said.Ms Long said tensions have increased in the area in recent days.The alert caused delays during rush hour traffic and affected bus services in the area.
