A ‘viable device’ has been found during a security alert in Belfast, police have said.

The device which was found at the Royal Mail sorting office at Tomb Street has been removed for forensic examination.

Meanwhile, the army carried out a controlled explosion during a security alert in south Belfast.

The Ormeau Road was closed after the discovery of a suspicious object.

Police examining the item, which was located at Artana Street on Thursday morning, said the alert was a hoax.

SDLP South Belfast MP Dr Alasdair McDonnell said: "I utterly condemn the actions of those responsible for this device. They have disrupted life in this vibrant part of our city and are causing great distress to many people who have been prevented from going about their daily business.

"South Belfast has suffered enough over the years at the hands of terror and the perpetrators of this act must realise that their dangerous actions will achieve absolutely nothing."
