Detectives are investigating a possible link between the car bomb attack on constable Peadar Heffron and a similar attack in Dundonald in 2009
Detectives probing the attempted murder of a Catholic police officer near Randalstown Have said they are investigating a possible link with a similar attack in East Belfast last year.

A PSNI officer's girlfriend escaped injury after a car bomb exploded in the Kingsdale area in October 2009.

33-year-old Peadar Heffron remains in a critical condition the Royal Victoria Hospital after losing his leg in the Milltown explosion on Friday 8th January.

The device went off as the captain of the PSNI's GAA team was making his way to work.

Officers revisited the scene on Thursday night to speak to witnesses in the area.

Detective Chief Inspector Glen Wright, who is leading the inquiry, said:

"One of our lines of enquiry is that we are looking at links between this and the investigation into the Kingsdale attack in Dundonald on October 16th .

"Thankfully in that case (the bomb) did not cause major injury, unlike what happened to Peadar Heffron."
