The fire broke out at an oil tank in the Carnhill estate at around 6.35am on Friday.

Police had to evacuate a number of neighbouring properties while firefighters tackled the blaze.

In some cases the police had to force their way into the properties in order to alert the elderly residents.

Six people were accommodated for at the nearby Templemore Leisure centre.

Police remain at the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire.

They have appealed for anyone with information in connection with the incident to contact investigating officers.
