It is also 25 years since the marking out of the historic City Walls.
Volunteers formed a human chain around the structures for the event dubbed 'Wave on the Walls', which is also raising funds for the Foyle Hospice.
The bells rang out across the city to mark the start of the wave at 12pm on Sunday.
Among those taking part at Guildhall Square were Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, the Dean of Saint Columb's Church of Ireland Cathedral and the Mayor of Derry Martin Reilly.
This event is part of National Heritage Week when 23 towns across Ireland will be celebrating the heritage of their Town Walls.
