A suspicious object found at Aileach Road in the Ballymagroarty area sparked the alert shortly before 10pm.

Residents were told to evacuate amid police concerns the object was an explosive device.

Army technical officers carried out a controlled explosion and made the area safe.

People were out of their homes until around 5.30am.
